The Specialization Diploma in Public Health, created in collaboration with the Agencia de Salud Pública de Catalunya and the Agencia de Salud Pública de Barcelona, aims to provide health professionals with skills in the basic disciplines of Public Health and to introduce them to the essential tools used for the interpretation, control and evaluation of health problems.

The main objective of the programme is to provide the basic knowledge and competences necessary for public health professionals, through public administrations or other citizen services, to be able to develop more effectively their role in the field of health promotion and protection, surveillance, control and prevention of diseases and their risk factors in the population, considering the socio-political and economic context of their environment.

For this reason, the Specialisation Diploma in Public Health focuses on identifying the key concepts and tools for understanding what public health is, how it is structured and what functions and skills professionals who want to work in this field need to develop, starting with the definition of public health and the related institutions, as well as the basic tools for understanding, monitoring and analysing the health of the population and the factors that determine it. Practical elements for planning, developing and evaluating community interventions are also introduced.

Finally, the development and defence of a research project is proposed as the culmination of the programme.

The specific objectives of the Specialisation Diploma in Public Health are as follows:

  • To acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge of the nature of public health and its capacity to transform societies by providing progress and well-being, but also by posing new challenges from an ethical perspective.
  • To analyse the main priorities and major current problems facing public health.
  • To reflect on the relationships between the different actors involved in the development of public health.
  • To learn about the main professional areas in which public health is developed, how they have evolved in recent decades and what the prospects for future development are.
  • Gain a comparative view of the public health landscape in different contexts, emphasising those examples of good and bad practice that have been decisive in the evolution of the profession.
  • Acquire the practical skills necessary for the professional practice of public health.
  • Acquire the knowledge and practical experience necessary to develop professional and research projects in the field of public health, integrating both theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Develop and defend a specific research project, necessary to obtain accreditation by the National School of Health and the UPF-BSM.

In this way, throughout the program you will learn to identify the main health problems of the population and their determinants, and you will approach them from a holistic and professional viewpoint. You will learn the resources to make health promotion and disease and health problem control and prevention policies more effective, you will learn to understand their determinants and highlight inequalities in the health of the population. You will gain experience and know how to respond to alerts, outbreaks and emergencies. You will also acquire the basic skills to carry out epidemiological research and discover how to promote community health from a health and equity perspective.

Curriculum

The course is organized into 10 didactic units of practical orientation, in which learning will be built from the various activities directly linked to professional transfer.

Along with the activities, debate spaces and documentation for each unit available in the eCampus, a wide range of teaching materials will be made available to students that will facilitate general understanding, the execution of the tasks of the various units of the program, and the acquisition of key competencies to access multiple professional opportunities.

Unit 1

Identify the main components of the organisation and financing of public systems and their relationship with public health, of which public health is a part.

Understand the concepts and foundations of statistics applied to health sciences and to be able to carry out research work, as well as critically assess the quantitative methodology of the articles published in this speciality.

Know what epidemiology is and learn the basic measures of frequency, association, and impact (both its basic calculation and its interpretation) to describe collective health and the design of basic epidemiological studies.

Acquire the necessary knowledge for the development of a research project, which constitutes the instrument that allows the connection of research ideas with the practical undertaking of the study. It includes the completion of the end of Diploma project.

The aim of this work is to assess the competences associated with the diploma, to apply the knowledge acquired and to put into practice skills related to oral and written presentation. This work must be the result of the student's autonomous work, although it will be supervised and tutored by one of the diploma lecturers.

There are two distinct parts. The first aims to critically examine the main scientific, social and political factors fundamental to the generation of existing health and inequalities. The second part reviews all elements related to mobility injuries, occupational accidents, occupational diseases and disabilities, and work-related risks.

Understand the conceptual and instrumental methods that allow the objectives of the surveillance of the population and its health situation to be achieved.

Review the principles and conceptual bases of the epidemiological control of communicable diseases and analyse the control of various communicable diseases, , such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, epidemic outbreaks, sexually transmitted infections, and other emerging infectious processes which are linked to the growing mobility of people.

Acquire knowledge of those aspects related to the environment, nature and food industries, the good development and management of which have an impact on the good health of the population.

Integrate the conceptual and theoretical bases on which health promotion and disease prevention and their risk factors are based, and to train students in the design, analysis and evaluation of preventive and health promotion interventions.

Understand, through problem-based learning, the concepts of community, community health and community health care, from the point of view of health services or from society, emphasizing the promotion of joint programs of primary care services, preventive medicine, and public health.

The practical component of the Diploma of Specialisation in Public Health recommends the completion of practical work, the aim of which is for students to gain experience in research methodology and the practical application of this research in the professional framework of public health. Likewise, in order to obtain the Diploma in Public Health, accredited by the National School of Health, it is compulsory to complete and submit the equivalent course credits for this practical work, equivalent to a personal workload of 75 hours.

The main objective of the work is to get students to apply all the knowledge acquired during the course by doing a project related to public health and preferably on a topic that is part of their usual professional task. Thus, students can choose a topic of work from the proposals made by the coordination of the diploma and the teaching staff, but they can also propose a topic of their interest linked to their professional experience.
